I've been told that the latest INFO WORLD says that Borland is expected to
lose about $20 million this latest quarter (ending 12/31) due to lackluster
sales of PDOXWIN and DBASEWIN.
I find this particularly disturbing since Borland lowered the price of both
products to help boost sales.
So, what do you all think will happen to Borland? I've always been a Borland
fan and supporter. I've always felt they put out quality products at more
than reasonable prices. But it's obvious their financial woes are continuing
and something will have to happen.
I doubt that Borland would want to sell DBASE, since it accounts for about
half of their sales. I suspect the sale of PARADOX to Novell may be a
possibility, however, particularly since Novell's PerfectOffice will not be
truly a Novell product as long as PDOXWIN is owned and developed by Borland.
Or, will Borland (and all it's products) end up being sold to IBM, Novell, or
some other larger company?
I truly hope Borland pulls out of this, as Microsoft will end up controlling
the whole software industry if current trends continue.
