      DANGER POINT IS PENDING

A lack of surgeons in England and Wales is set to reach crisis point over
the next five years, a report by the profession is due to warn.
The study by the Royal College of Surgeons will call for a series of key
changes to combat the shortfall.

Among them are increased funding, improved working conditions and more
flexible training programmes to attract higher numbers of specialists.

The report, due to be published later today, will warn the retention of
surgeons is being hampered at both ends of the age range.

Newcomers are being put off from entering the profession because of
widespread problems.

And huge numbers are taking early retirement because of the same
difficulties.

Another obstacle awaiting the profession is the effect of the European
Working Time Directive.

The report is due to say that the shorter working hours imposed by the
directive mean more surgeons will be needed to cover the workload.
