Hi Craig,
Excuse the butting in, but my DHF AG is trained to go potty on command to the
point of forcing one out, but IF I forget to say "go potty" she will likely
poop on me - that's the next step we haven't taken.
Her training proceedure came from an aritcle in Bird Talk published a number
of years ago. YOU first need to be trained to know when she shows signs of
going - the squat, tail raise, etc. The basic idea is to catch her when she
is about to go, like when you first pick her off of the perch. Say the
command phrase. If you are good, she will go when you expect her too. If you
conincide, praise the living daylights out of her, rewarding (oral for us)
each time. Repeat, repeat. I found AM to be the best time. Took us (she
was young) less than a month. The article mentioned a bird that had not
soiled it cage, but waits for the owner! That's a bit extreme for me.
Creates a problem if you are on vacation ...
