"Sticky wicket" is indeed a cricket term. The wicket is the little piece of
wood balanced on the board that is supposed to be knocked off to score (the
little piece of wood is supposed to be knocked off the board, I mean). It
should come off with the slightest bump, but sometimes, for some unknown
reason, they can take quite a vigorous thump without moving, as if they're
stuck there, making it unexpectedly difficult to score. Therefore, a sticky
wicket is something that is more difficult that it was expected to be
