I'm not convinced its actually possible. Particularly when
you allow for the result you can get on some laptops/notebooks.

Whats normally done is to have the system auto recognise the first
start, show the user and absolutely minimal selection of mono/color
etc. Telix is the most obvious example of that approach.

Fraid so. You are presumably using Hercules. MDA is lower.
