Hi Greg!
-> TO> A pair of 8" for bass drum? I don't see the need for anything
-> TO> that fast for that particular instrument. I am fond of using
-> TO> 18" for LF
->
-> I think that's exactly why 8" woofers sound better than larger
-> woofers for kick drums. Their speed (easier for the amp to move
-> them).
T Owen and I have discussed many things in a number of conferences, and
generally agree on most things, but most of the time, he is looking at
things from the touring concert sound perspective. An 18" is my choice
for a sub speaker as well, and in my studio, I use a pair of 18" woofers
as subs in my monitor system with Klipsch on top, 100 watts on each sub.
It would probably be better to go mono and bridge the power amplifer to
get additional power and coupling from the cabinets, and in a live sound
situation I would probably do just that.
However, I think you are still discussion an application of subs for a
car, which in itself is topic duplication and can be better talked about
in CAR_AUDIO echo on many of these fine Fidonet systems.
Your use of two 8" for subs does have some merit. A very popular bass
amplifier was the Ampeg SVT which used 6 6146 tubes for the finals, and
two cabinets of 8-10" speakers. Talk about a cabinet that could SPEAK!
There's a "rule of thumb" that 2 15"s = 1 18", 2 12's = 1 15", etc..
when talking about cone area. 2 of the new extended low 8"s would be
like a 10" speaker (not enough time to do real math for this), and would
have a quicker response than a sluggish 18" or 30" (Jensen) woofer.
 Also, I believe that you are dealing with damping factor problems in a
car due to the low voltages and such, but not positive that this is the
case, and perhaps most importantly of all, the need for cabinet space to
make 2 8"s to work appropriately well.
 As to the original question of how to strip out a bass drum from
everything else because you want to only hear it, I still strongly
object to your motives from many points of view, but it's your ears and
your life, but I have to pity your neighbors who must be subected to
your desire for twisting mixes well beyond any musical usefulness and
will deny any responsibility for any information here that you may
misuse!
