Unlike dogs or even cats, birds aren't very good playmates for children.
  Birds can be injured easily, they know it, and they'll do what it
takes to protect themselves.  That includes biting which at least macaws
and cockatoos are capable of doing well. A frightend bird is a poor
companion as the only choices it considers are escape and attack.   A
bird needs a lot of attention and companionship.   Where will you find
time the time for the kids, the bird, and your husband?   None behave
well if given inadequate attention.
