I had a look at Rich's reference and all I can say is "ugh".
Brings back = unpleasant memories of past systems I've worked on as they
transitioned = from a lesser number of bits to a greater number. Segmented
= architectures are evil, and cause no end of grief for the application =
developer community.
For better or worse, Java development tools like the IBM ones I help =
develop are consuming vast amounts of memory. The latest release of our =
stuff recommends using up to 1G of RAM. Least you think this is just =
bloated IBM software :-) note that the latest release of JBuilder is = also
recommending 1G of RAM. Add more of course, if you have other = memory
intensive applications in concurrent use, or wish to run a local = database
during development.

Rich,
True, but it is a segmented architecture. Maybe not bad, but has =
penalties.
But I really wonder about Dave's point. Even though people are =
regularly equipping systems with a gig, are they really using it? Or are =
they putting it in "just in case".
