PE> Why not use a different compiler? EMX 0.9b is a 32-bit DOS-extended,
PE> ISO-conforming compiler. You may also be able to use LSI-C, available
PE> for FREQ from 3:711/934. There is another one around which I don't
PE> have, Hitech C.

JG> Sounds good except that it just might not work too well on my XT
JG> and I'm not in a position, or a hurry, to upgrade my computer. If I ever
JG> do end up with something a bit more modern I will possibly have a good look
JG> at some other compilers, although I like PCC.

LSI-C and Hitech C are both XT. The former is small memory model only.

JG> about ANSII, let alone ISO. Besides, ISO has no business messing about
JG> with programing languages.

PE> And why is that?

JG> A weights and measures body has no business dealing with anything

It isn't.

JG> which can, at best, be described as being one of the arts. My own feeling
JG> is that once C started to get away from the original K&R specs it should
JG> simply have become a new language.

It compiles all your K&R C programs, if that's what you want.

JG> As far as standards go, they mean _nothing_ unless you can compile
JG> _any_ source code (for a given language) using _any_ compiler. Not likely
JG> to happen on this planet.

You can compile ANY strictly conforming C program on ANY conforming
C compiler. As I do all the time, from MVS EBCDIC mainframes to
XTs.

PE> FREQ ANSI_C.* from 3:711/934 and you will get a copy
PE> of the ANSI C draft, which is basically identical to ISO/IEC
PE> 9899:1990. I am very interested to know what you think is wrong with
PE> ANSI_C.*. I reckon it's perfect. BFN. Paul.

JG> I _am_ interested in the standards specs, even if I don't agree
JG> with them, or the body which laid them out, and would like to get a copy of
JG> this file. I am trying to find out how do Freq but have been told that
JG> it's a sysop only function. If you could shed any more light on this it
JG> would certainly help, as I often get a reply which has something along the
JG> lines of "Freq file ABC.ZIP from 3:456/789".

Dial 02-436-1785 and download DEVIL*.* and your life will be changed
forever! BFN. Paul.
