I've gotten fairly good results from both my 33.6k modems (a SupraFAXModem 
and a USR V.everything).  I regularly get 28.8k-33.6k connects locally and 
24.0k-28.8k connects cross country.  And even 24.0k is a LOT better than 
14.4, unless you don't consider an additional 1000+ cps as 'much' ?!?
