Oh please, get serious! ;-)
We checked these things out in our VCR-repair-office with perfectly
setup VCRs and:
  - they backup perfectly, all data seems in to be in great shape even
    on tape, BUT
  - we were under absolutely no circumstances able to restore these
    data in any way - not even a part of it
And, phoning with the manufacturer, we soon found out he knew this
problem... :-(((
