I could set up a mortar, or a .50 cal machine gun in my dining room, and
it wouldn't hurt anybody EVER, if nobody touched it!

But that's the rub isn't it. How do you keep the fingers off? Guns don't
exist in a vacuum. Heinlein's illogic demands that people not act like
eople.
It would have us believe that a bright and shiny 50 cal sitting in Jim
enry's
dining room would never be touched! Now, I am sure of your truthfullness and
would accept your promise to never touch it :-), but how about everyone else
with access to your dining room? You couldn't keep guard over it all the time
and any security system can be breeched. Maybe if you poured cement on it
then nobody could touch it. But, then it wouldn't be very dangerous anymore
would it and what's the use of a non-dangerous 50 cal taking up your dining
room... that would be silly.
