"The Basic core. All good music is manipulation. anything else, like
Muzak, is wallpaper."
tada! Quote of the day!
RM> So, here's the big question- Who do you compose for? Is it for worldwide
RM> distribution? A select group of friends? To blow away other musicians?
Or
RM> is it a masturbatory exercise?
mostly as a masturbatory exercise,... let's say that I compose
music because I like composing music, and I like the music I compose,
and some of things I compose I like them much more than my favorite
band's creations. That's because I know what I like, and I know how to
concentrate it into one piece of music.
My audience?... almost nobody. It's Prog music, such as King Crimson,
Yes, ELP, Happy Family, etc., but it has a taste of Trip-Hop, i.e.
Portishead, Bj”rk, Tricky, ... That way I'm almost sure that less than
1% of the population is interested. :+)
RM> well, and it better have a melody. Musicians and Jazz audiences will get
RM> off on artful uses of rhythm and chord changes, while Prog rock
RM> fans and people in eastern Europe will want to hear changes in
RM> time and very very complex rhythmic patterns.
Prog fans also like jazz-like and classical-like chord progressions and
scale changes.
RM> behind the vast artistic umbrella of "Music Comp" and just write, when
RM> the first question should be "Who is this for?"
"Who is this for?"... the question is usually answered by the ones who
like the song. The song is for them, and for nobody else.
It is not mandatory to have a target audience. You may compose on-the-fly
very interesting music. But defining your target audience and making a
piece of music accordingly isn't bad, as long as you are part of that
audience, otherwise it tends to become muzak.
RM> Music is communication, first and foremost. How do you communicate, and
RM> with whom?
Music is communication, yeah, but you can communicate with yourself,
right?... It's like writing a book. Do you begin to wonder what kind of
people will read your book?.. No. You usually write it, and then people
read it.
