There are error levels referenced for this in the 4.10 docs. See section
C2. COMMAND LINE. The error level when exiting with new netmail is 1 and
with new echomail is 2.

The problem with that solution is that it does not deal with netmail. The
one I use looks like this:

   ----- readmsg.bat begins -----
{at}echo off
{at}rem batch file for use with msgEd message editor
c:
cd c:\binkley
msged.exe
if errorlevel 5 goto end
if errorlevel 3 goto export
if errorlevel 2 goto export
if errorlevel 1 goto pack
if errorlevel 0 goto end

:export
  c:
  cd c:\binkley
  sq386 out squash -fc:\fidomail\msg\areas.lst
  goto end

:pack
  c:
  cd c:\binkley
  sq386 squash
  goto end

:end
  del c:\fidomail\msg\areas.lst
  cd\
  exit ----- readmsg.bat ends -----

It seems to work reasonably well.

Take care,
