CB>What is going on back east--Matt S. had mentioned this in a post to me a
few
CB>weeks ago. I hope that doesn't happen here. The community
CB>colleges in this area are scrambling to provide technical
CB>courses for all kinds of jobs that are open in the area--
CB>but they are for people that have had some training. For
CB>example, the college offers a program in Library Science
CB>(an associates degree). Several of their students have been
CB>hired locally at public and school libraries.
There are many interpretations of the reports proclaiming that U.S.
public education is failing our children by not setting high enough
standards. MY reaction has been that we can set higher standards AND
expand opportunities for kids - I see no problem with a kid taking a
technology program in high school as long as that program, too, has high
standards.
Those serving on our State Board of Regents (sort of like our state-wide
board of education) and our commissioner have decided that higher
standards means all kids have to take exactly the same high school
program (college prep - with the opportunity for a few electives as
juniors and seniors). I am glad I'm near retirement - I think New York
is going to have one heck of a mess on their hands in a few years.
CB>I think that college prep is cheap and easy on the
CB>taxpayers pocket-however it is often the worst choice for
CB>quite a number of students.
That's very true too. By eliminating a lot of choices, we can cut
staffing and material costs. Much cheaper.
