In most cases it's done incrementally, so it's more like a few hundred GB
at most. If the database is not capable of taking snapshots of itself, you
can either use an integrated backup suite (read: Veritas) or use a
secondary mirror database and take that offline and back it up (directly or
via filesystem snapshots (read: Veritas)).
To put it all on tape, you need a tape robot. Obviously :) We use a
StorageTek something-or-other, which has a built-in Sun E450 (putting it in
the "we eat fire and little children for breakfast" category)
controlling it... backups can be trickled over ethernet one file at a time
via a client daemon, or you can dump the whole snapshot directly to the
E450 via ethernet, SCSI or FiberChannel, and have it back it up from there.
We don't actually use it for TB databases, just lots and lots of ordinary
servers, but you can use it for that. I'd love to see what they use for
10+TB databases...
Oh yeah.. if you think it costs a lot to store a few TB worth of data,
prepare to bend over coz it's gonna cost lot more to back it up :)
