Field? No, of course not. You won't be able to pack it on your belt very
easily.
High priced toy? No more of a "toy" with a price tag than an AR-8000, Scout,
Explorer, frequency counter, Icom R-7000, PRO-2004, etc.
Shielding and interference? It's well done, and it works. The stigma of RFI
from computers is a bit overdrawn and unfairly pegged. MOST RFI comes from
the Video Display Unit (monitor) and its cabling. The computer doesn't
really emit all that much. WInRadio is solidly shielded from CPU
interference, and all non-signal lines are capacitively bypassed.
My WinRadio is not any noisier than the stand-alone scanners in my shop.
There are five computers and display units in the shop alone, and ten on
site. The WinRadio computer hasn't had a case on it in years, as neither of
a couple other computers out here. And I don't have a noise problem. I
understand that some people do. Most of the time, it is their monitors.
As for anything and everything else, WinRadio is an all-band receiver
covering 500 kHz through 1300 MHz. It's software and database controlled,
which means that a lot of power exists at the fingertips of the operator that
cannot be available by means of "normal" equipment.
It will suit a lot of needs wonderfully well. It will suit many needs
marginally well. It will not suit portability needs in the slightest, that's
for sure.
