To be fair, asking for a file that isnt there mightbe on account of apt
looking at a correupt list of files it wanst to updte BUT if I recall
correctly the messages about what was not fund were in no way corrupt

Gettimg 404s during update is something not uncommon,. It means that
someone is actually changing files on the server. The list of files and
the files that are in fact there at times do not match

AIUI - and I may be wrong - te sequbce of an update is this

apt reads its sources.list file and determines which repositoriries to use.

It goes to these repositories AND DOWNLOADS A LIST OF ALL THE FILES THAT
ARE AVAILABLE. Note that this information is not sited on the client pi,
but in the repository,.
The PI then attempts to download the versions of all the files in the
repository.

Therforea 404 error at this point indicatess thet the *repostory* is
corrupt and that there aree files in the master list that do not exist
in the repository

Normally this is a transient condition but if using a caching proxy its
possibloe this state of affairs might get 'frozen' as a snapshot

So far the OP has declined to say which mobile ISP he is using so we
cant research to see if it uses a caching proxy by default. Many do.

Neither has he correctly typed in any commands that might elicit wherher
he has inadvertantly configured apt to use a proxy.

He has consistently only done such checks as his own limited worldview
insists are relevant, not the checks that otehrs wioyh mnore expereince
would need to do to understand what is going on.

My neigbour gets loads of emails claiming his system has been hacked and
his porn masturbation sessions have been recorded - coming from what
seems to be his account. He then panics, changes his passwords and locks
himself out on his mobile and his laptop and then tell me that 'nothing
works and he is sure someone is in his systems because stuff that worked
yesterday doesnt work today'.

I think its early onset dementia.

As I was strugglling to fix his last fiddle he asaid 'why not let me do
it' and I am afraid my patience snapped and I told him 'because you
don't know what you are doing and I do'

He hasnt spoken to me since....

I am getting the same feeling now
