SP> Has anyone noticed path problems with DOS programs under 95?
Yes, in one particular instance. We presently have one, and only one,
Win95 install on our network. During the system login script, there is a
small batch file that runs, presenting a banner screen to the user and
then prompting for a y/n response. This batch file has worked without a
problem on all the DOS and Win3.x workstations on this network for over
a year. The batch file and all related files (like the one that waits
for the y/n response) reside on the server in a location that gets
mapped as a search drive as z:.
When I first installed Win95 on this workstation, one curious problem I
had was that it would *not* pause at this banner screen. I'd see a
series of windows open on the desktop as the login script ran, one of
which would contain the display of the banner, but they'd all close
immediately. Eventually, I noticed a brief "bad command or filename"
error on the banner screen, just before it closed. I edited the batch
file to include lines making the Z:\ drive and directory current at the
beginning and everything worked.
So, it appears that, for some reason, Win95 couldn't find the executable
files on drive z:, even if it was a search drive. Once it was made the
current drive and directory, it found them and worked as it was supposed
to. Seems to me that at least some aspects of pathing are broken under
Win95.
