 General Election hasn't been declared - but you'd have had to be living on
another planet for the past few months to have escaped the parties' pitch
for your votes.
Yesterday, the Conservative leader Michael Howard set out his stall for
pensioners, with the promise of rebates on council tax.

Today, the Liberal Democrats launch their own bid for voters - with a series
of policy initiatives targeted towards women.

The package includes generous maternity benefits for new mothers - and
improvements to the state pension for women.


a.. This morning, Breakfast talked live to the Liberal Democrat leader
Charles Kennedy.
We asked him about the Lib Dems' manifesto promises for women - and whether
the party will support the government's attempts to find a compromise over
"control orders" for terrorist suspects currently imprisoned without trial.

a.. The Lib Dems' manifesto for women promises £170 a week maternity pay for
the first six months for all new mothers.

It also pledges to introduce a new citizen's pension, based on how long
people have lived in the UK, rather than on National Insurance
contributions.

At the moment, many women can't even claim the full basic state pension,
because they have taken time out of the jobs market to bring up a family.

The Liberal Democrats also believe their existing pledge to abolish
university tuition fees will appeal strongly to women.
