subject: Antennas by Roy

Greetings Ed!

EV>>> So a Quagi looks like it has two square reflector sections instead
 EV>>> of reflector elements?

RW>>> No, a Quagi has a quad reflector and driven element. The rest
RW>>> are parasitic orhestra* leaders. 8^) > directors*

EV>> Yes, Tom already set me right about Your antenna.

RW>> Did he mention that the mirror of the driven loop is slightly
RW>> larger than the driven loop?

EV> I figured 'all by myself' the rear loop would be slightly larger than
EV> the driven loop 'cuz reflector(s) are slightly larger than the driven
EV> portion of the antennas I've read about.

Good show. I like people who can figure things out without someone holding
their hand...

EV>>> It has been a long time since I seen a Gizmotchee Antenna.
EV>>> The ones I saw IIRC only had two sections, Yours has four.

RW>>> Note that it has one driven element for either vertical or
RW>>> horizontal polarization. Tha required two lengths of coax run
RW>>> to a switch box at the operating station. I used RG8 for that.
RW>>> Coax was cheap in c1969.

EV>>> Remember I never heard them called by that name until You mentioned
 EV>>> it some time ago.

RW>>> What were they called then?

EV> I meant that I never heard of any name for those antennas.
EV> To me they were just some antenna the CB'ers learned about, as I
EV> never saw any mention of them in the literature that I read. -snip-

Well, you learn something new everyday. I just visited a web site;
www.gizmotchy.com and found out the antenna was named after the inventer;
Charles Gizmotchy, way back in the early 60s...then I was awed by the
"Extreme Gizmotchys" of 9 elements, 8 elements and 7 elements still in
use today. You can even find a list of sellers there, including one in the
Netherlands.

EV>> I forget who it was that made the V-80 Vertical that a friend sold
EV>> me to use on 80M and 40M, I only now remembered it was called the
EV>> V-80. That was my first Antenna and it was a long time ago too.

RW>> An 40mtr inverted V with coils to make it electrically longer
 RW>> for 80mtr?

EV> No, just two 1" O.D. aluminum pipes that was put together to make a
EV> Long Vertical Antenna somewhere around 20 foot long, with a 3" Coil
EV> at the bottom with a flea clip connected to the center conductor of
EV> coax to place on a coil winding for tuning it to a frequency in the
 EV> 80M Ham Band.

I've seen that setup before. Simple enough to make and use.

EV> For 40M the flea clip got put at the top winding of the coil attached
EV> to the base of the vertical pipe.

EV> A wire connected to the shield of the coax went down to my ground rod
EV> because my Ham Shack was on the second floor.
EV> I never thought of it b4 but what I used looked sorta like a
EV> Vertically Polarized Dipole (Electrically) to my rig. -snip-

Cool.

RW>>> I also have one of my wife holding a wave guide in front of the
RW>>> back door to my shop; to show it in proportion to familar
 RW>>> things.

EV>> I've seen them too, they're real small, but they do the job.
 EV>> -snip-

RW>> Not this one. She's about 5'5" and the one she is holding is as
RW>> wide as she is tall and the perportions of it to the doorway
RW>> behind her and the pickup truck she's standing next to give you
RW>> an idea of how big it really is.

EV> One night someone talked about UHF at a Club Meeting and showed a
 EV> waveguide to the group.

Didn't mention what frequency it would be good for?

EV> It was a 12" long piece of copper sheet bent in a Rectangular Shape,
EV> and was about 2" High and 2.5" across and a metal tube was in the
EV> center of it and I think some Capacitors and maybe some Resistors.

Like my 1980s sat dish antenna's waveguide. A small rectangular box
contained a dipole that could be turned to vertical or horizontal
polarization with the small motor attached to it on the outside of the
waveguide. That sat on a pole that suspended it over a 10' parabula dish.

EV>> But now a days, if someone doesn't like the color of my socks, they
EV>> can sue me in court and win judgement against me.
EV>> It worked at McDonalds over Hot Coffee didn't it?

RW>> I dunno. Do you have scald marks where that coffee got to you?

EV> Twasn't Me! I thought I saw the News say it was a Woman that took
EV> McDonalds to Court, not a Man as I am.

I forgot to put a smilely on that one. I know of the case. 8^)

Dunno if you have any Jack-in-the-Box restaurants around your area, but
they too were sued by a person who got ill from eating one of their
hamburgers that was tainted with the E Coli bacteria/virus(?)...The end
result was that 'Jack' decided that you couldn't get a hamburger cooked
'your way' anymore; it had to be cooked 'well done' (burnt in my book) to
kill the E. Coli. Tom is probably well aware of this, as JitB used to be
owned by Ralston-Purina in San Diego and has since gone privately owned by
their employees.

We went in their store here in Texas last week and it was a very big
disappointment from their glory days. The place smelled like an old greasy
diner and it was filthy. They had no iced tea fountain drinks and the
service was very poor, like the counter gal was out back taking a bathroom
break with no one to take her place while she was gone. We didn't want to
stay, so we ordered to go. When we got the burgers open, the buns were
soaked in grease and the burgers were burnt to a crisp. I took the receipt
and used the website given on it for 'visiter review' and gave them a
piece of my mind, telling 'Jack' that we wouldn't be back for more of the
same crap.

 EV> ... Johnson & Johnson Tagline: ...............

I don't get it.

    Have a day!
