-[ Quoting William Elliot , to Dennis Menard ]-
DM> That's true. But there are a number of anecdotal cases that really
DM> prompt one to wonder; check out the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal,
DM> Philadelphia, about 14 years ago, black activist, on death row for
DM> about a dozen years now. Time's running out for him; scheduled for
DM> execution next summer, I believe. This is only an example. Even a
WE> What? It wasn't this summer? I consider this more of an example of
WE> federal misconduct yet it also smells of blatant racial bias. Stuff
WE> like this deliberately gets aired too late for much to be done to
WE> apprehend the framers. It's standard practice.
Just checked. As of January 04, 1998:
The Governor of Pennsylvania signed the death warrant on June 02, 1995 for
an August 17, 1995 execution. On August 07, 1995, the execution was stayed.
On September 15, 1995 Judge Sabo denied the Petition for Post-Conviction
Relief, refusing to grant a new trial. On February 27, 1997 Pennsylvania
Supreme Court denied Mumia Abu-Jamal's motion for oral arguments in a one-
sentence order. Court granted a request by the District Attorney's office
to file additional arguments in the case; this, after the court had denied
Mumia's attorneys' request to file additional responses. June 26 - July 01,
1997 some new testimony from Pamela Jenkins was heard in Judge Sabo's court
revealing more information about the police-coerced perjury used against
Mumia in the original trial.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court is deliberating Mumia's appeal now and may
announce its decision regarding a new trial very soon!
WE> Me neither, as I recall, framing seemed quite possible. But it's
WE> small potatoes, as the framer was just a racist cop trying to bag
WE> himself a brownie. Now it the guy was also a political activists or
WE> labor leader, the plot would thicken.
Mumia Abu-Jamal was a Black Panther. !?
WE> Here's one. Environmentalists work with loggers to get the loggers to
WE> realize: no forest, no jobs. The environmentalist who forged this
WE> labor alliance get car bombed on the way to an important forest meeting
WE> in SF. They wake up in the hospitable charged with possession of
WE> explosive devices. Previously they had received telephone warnings and
WE> discussed such with an unsympathetic police force. Weren't they ever
WE> stuck in a log jam!
Accuse the victim! Disorients 'em proper and convinces a gullible public
they have made a profound error in judgement. Right or wrong, a majority is
always safe when you're going with the flow ...
Hmm ... Sounds typical. New Zealand is a lovely place, lots of trees. But,
you know, except for Fjordland (ie, SW corner of the South Island) all those
trees are planted in the straightest, most unnatural rows you'll ever see.
Makes one long for a little primordial chaos. Of course, that highly prized
tight grain only comes from forests that have survived for a loong time (ie,
old-growth, not trees planted in re-forestation projects).
DM> Why do statistics reveal that, in states where the death penalty has
DM> been RE-instated after years of not having it, the rate of capital
DM> crimes within the first few years actually increases instead of
DM> decreasing?
WE> Don't know, can't guess, didn't know about this.
Annual almanacs are often good sources of comparitive statistics. Posted a
sample from Florida and Georgia to Day Brown, recently.
