Hi Disen:
OK. FoxPro on Novell 3.11: My recommendation is to get Pinnacle
Publishing's NetLib for FoxPro. It is excellent and I use it in every
instance of FP and Novell.
Idiosyncracies on a LAN by FoxPro: well, deadly embrace has been discussed
already. As you are already aware, I'm sure, FP moves faster when you have
EXCLUSIVE use of your tables. It doesn't allow for sharing, but it IS
faster. Still, SET EXCLUSIVE OFF should be one of your first statements of
your main program.
There are about 7 different FP commands that require EXCLUSIVE use, some of
which are outdated and irrelevant anymore. But INDEX, PACK and ZAP are in
use in my applications. I know many avoid PACK, and with good reason, but my
stuff often needs reduction once the records are processed or "cleared." I
may delete as many as 5 - 10K records each day. The new records coming in
are INSERTed, which is much faster than APPEND BLANK and more practical for
our normal purposes. Where manual additions are made, I prefer the BLANK
record routines mentioned elsewhere.
This may or may not help, but I hope it does.
