Dear Joan, 
    May i suggest that you keep a lookout for an old leather jacket that 
you can salvage [  i pay $5 for one in good condition].   Jacket leather 
is usually soft and you will be able to tell if it is thin.  The back 
of all leather is swede. 
   I salvage them right along to make pouches and use the shiny side out 
or rough side out depending on color, and condition.   Of course, this 
leaves me with a lot of scrapes not suitable for pouches [not even small 
ones].  From these i make thimbles, watchband covers, book marks, 
medallions, etc..   
    Please tell me more about what you are making.
