the '/' you left out before the '*' is important... it is just as important as
the one you left out at the beginning of the path ;)

  grep proxy etc/apt/apt.conf.d*

is not the same as

  grep proxy etc/apt/apt.conf.d/*

is not the same as

  grep proxy /etc/apt/apt.conf.d*

is not the same as

  grep proxy /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/*

this last one is the proper one...
