Strangely enough there aren't lots of viruses around which play
with the monitor's scanning frequency. One explanation may be that
they can't be tested before release if you don't have a neighbour
that used to collect monitors but now think he don't have enough
time for his collection and decided to give it to you or something
similar.
But it is perfectly possible to kill a monitor by software. Some
years ago I tried it myself on an old monitor. I made a nice program
with which one could increase the scanning frequency by pressing
the '+'. After some time on a too high frequency (and some nice show on
the monitor) the monitor broke with a quiet "pop".
I really must get out more often... :-)
