-=> Quoting KATHY JOHNSON to THOMAS SWAIN <=-
KJ> Have you taken them in to see a vet recently? I had the exact same
KJ> thing happen with my Jenday conure pair. They would lay 4 to 5 eggs;
KJ> only one would be fertile and hatch. The rest were clear. I had a FULL
KJ> physical done on both of them, including bloodwork and fecal cultures.
KJ> They had a mild bacterial infection; not enough to make them SICK, but
KJ> we felt it affected their fertility. We treated them with antibiotics,
KJ> and set them up to breed after they re-tested "clean". First clutch was
KJ> the same thing--one baby, out of 5 eggs.
No I have not taken them to the vet lately. However, I will now just to be
sure. I know sometimes even though they appear perfectly healthy they can
have problems.
KJ> But they went BACK to nest, and laid 4 eggs. So far, 3 were fertile
KJ> (although I fear that two of them may have died during development). I
KJ> am happy anyway, because at least we've gotten more fertile eggs in a
KJ> clutch than ever before. It's a start.
KJ> Other things you need to consider are:
KJ> Are the perches sturdy? If the birds can't get a good contact during
KJ> mating because the perches bend or move, or if there isn't enough
KJ> room for them to manipulate while ON the perches, that can affect
KJ> fertility.
KJ> You might also think of trimming back the feathers over the vent area
KJ> (CAREFULLY!!!) before setting them up--if the feathers are too thick,
KJ> it may affect sperm transfer to the hen.
KJ> Let me know what you have and haven't tried yet.
I am going to try replacing the perches because the ones I have roll and turn
this may be the problem. Also, the perches may be to small I am not sure
hat
diameter would be correct for quakers, do you know? If this fails I will try
trimming the vent feathers. So far I have tried adding a vitamin supplement
to the food for fertility. Also, I tried giving them more fresh vegetables
and fruit to supplement their diet.
I appreciate the advice you gave me and I will definitely let you know how
it works when I have babies.
Thanks again,
Thomas Swain
