I wondered if the mercury in the barometer might be used as a mirror in 
some sort of optical triangulating device. I can visualize such a 
thing, but I don't know how accurate it would be. 
  
The accuracy of the barometer as a pressure-measuring altimeter would 
be improved if it were not in air, but in water. Immerse the whole 
building in a big water tank.
