Decent people who cherish civil and individual liberties started that
little "rumor."

Phobias are products of fear.  Generally speaking, to be phobic is a
negative thing.  If someone is that insecure, or fearful, of someone
else's sexual preferences, that can only be seen as negative in a
logical sense.
