| subject: | Re: Food for Parakeets |
A good quality seed mix is fine. A mix of pellets and seeds is fine too.
Fresh fruits and vegetables (except for the few unsafe kind of course) are
good for them too. I would not feed budgies (or any bird) an all pellet diet
though. Budgies eat seeds in the wild, so of course seeds should be in your
bird's diet.
What's critically important is that you find yourself a very good avian vet
(not a regular vet as they are often uselss when it comes to treating birds)
who will treat a budgie with equal care as say, a blue and gold (as my avian
vet does), and you learn how to recognize the signs of illness in a bird. A
bird instinctively hides their illness, so you have to learn to recognize
those signs at an early stage (read and talk to people who know to find
out), and then always *immediately* take them for treatment.
Budgies can live long lives and amaze you with their intellect and
companionship (as amazing as any other bird) if they are given proper care
and attention.
