Debian is what I've been using for five or so years now. It's as complete
as a linux distro can get and they never ask for money.

There are other good ones too, like mandriva. You can use mandriva free but
they would like you to "upgrade" or subscribe to the powerpack
for $79 a year. I did subscribe before I moved to debian. I didn't mind the
$79 a year so much, debian just seems to run a bit smoother for me and it
is more complete.
