Don got a loaf when I was in Pensacola and the whole family is still bitching
at me for forgetting to make some before I left for Pensacola!
I make all our bread and have for years. Nothing overtly fancy about it.
Just a bread machine and several good recipes. Mostly whites or mixed white
and wheat or white and rye, but a few are 100% whole wheat or a whole wheat
and rye blend.
No preservatives so it will mold and dry out if not refridgerated (takes 3-6
days depending on recipe used as to when that happens). Usually there isnt
any left by the time it hits that point, but if there is, the birds still
love me ;-)
I just use a plastic keeper on the counter and that works for us. A nice
little slicing guide makes it easy to make samwiches from it. The guys at
work are facinated and thought I was spending hours each week making bread.
I said no. Takes about 3 mins to load the machine and let'er do it for me.
I made a light rye yesterday. Just a 1 lb loaf. They ate 1/2 of it already
so will make more later today for work lunches. Kinda in a peanut butter
mood so it will be a chewy slightly salty italian that will go well with
peanut butter or salami.
Oh the other reason besides it being just fun to make my own and no
preservatives? I'm CHEAP. I can make a loaf for 25cents that costs almost
4$ here in the stores. The most expensive recipes might hit close to 50cents
to make (cost of spices, grated cheeses, etc). If you can find those cheesy
loaves at all, you'll need a credit card to pay for them in the store! I saw
one that wasnt nearly as good, at over 10$ in the bakery!
