On 05/11/09, Jeff Snyder quoted Carol Shenkenberger: Re: Empires come, empires go (was: Re: Welcome). CS> I make all our bread and have for years. Nothing overtly fancy about it. CS> Just a bread machine and several good recipes. Mostly whites or mixed CS> white and wheat or white and rye, but a few are 100% whole wheat or a whole CS> wheat and rye blend. CS> CS> No preservatives so it will mold and dry out if not refridgerated (takes CS> 3-6 days depending on recipe used as to when that happens). Usually there CS> isnt any left by the time it hits that point, but if there is, the birds CS> still love me ;-) CS> CS> I just use a plastic keeper on the counter and that works for us. A nice CS> little slicing guide makes it easy to make samwiches from it. The guys at CS> work are facinated and thought I was spending hours each week making bread. CS> I said no. Takes about 3 mins to load the machine and let'er do it for me. CS> CS> I made a light rye yesterday. Just a 1 lb loaf. They ate 1/2 of it CS> already so will make more later today for work lunches. Kinda in a peanut CS> butter mood so it will be a chewy slightly salty italian that will go well CS> with peanut butter or salami. CS> CS> Oh the other reason besides it being just fun to make my own and no CS> preservatives? I'm CHEAP. I can make a loaf for 25cents that costs almost CS> 4$ here in the stores. The most expensive recipes might hit close to CS> 50cents to make (cost of spices, grated cheeses, etc). If you can find CS> those cheesy loaves at all, you'll need a credit card to pay for them in CS> the store! I saw one that wasnt nearly as good, at over 10$ in the bakery! Hello again Carol. As I believe I may have mentioned before, it has been many years since I have made home-made bread...decades in fact. Back during the 70's and 80's, I used to make a lot of home-made whole wheat bread. I have never used a bread machine. Back then, it was all manual...make the dough, knead it, let it rise, knead it again, stick it in the oven, and bake. Here on Guam, with electricity being as expensive as it is, and the tropical heat being what it is, we never ever use the oven for anything. I don't know how much electricity one of those bread machines uses, or how much heat it generates compared to an oven, but one of these days it might be a worthy investment. My daughter is a vegetarian, and she enjoys food and cooking, so she might possibly get interested in making her own bread in a bread machine. But then again, maybe not. She has her lazy side as well, and might just prefer our current habit of buying whole wheat bread at the store. :) Jeff Snyder, SysOp - Armageddon BBS Visit us at endtimeprophecy.org port 23 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your Download Center 4 Mac BBS Software & Christian Files.
