A Word file at the very least - I suspect most pdfs are made from .doc files.

It's good if all you intend to do is print the file.  If you expect to do
anything *else* with it it sucks (try filling out an IRS form in PDA... :( ). 
And let's be honest - how many people are going to want to print out an entire
book and waste all that paper when there are easier, still portable, formats to
use like PDAs?  Not I!
