DH> A police sergeant in upstate New York, having read some of my
DH> reporting on corporal punishment in public schools around the country,
DH> sent me a set of color photographs from a police lab. They were of his
DH> son, a third-grader.
DH> The boy had inadvertently yelled out when another student kicked him.
DH> Having thereby violated the school rule against noisemaking in class,
DH> he was paddled 12 times on the buttocks by the principal wielding a
DH> heavy paddle. That afternoon, the same incorrigible boy tripped over a
DH> desk and again made noise. The principal whacked the kid vigorously
DH> again.
Aside from the corporal punishment issue, this sounds like an extreme case of
a child being marked as the "school goat", as I painfully remember.
