Hi Rick ...
Well, we haven't talked since the beginning of March. So, this is to
bring you up-to-date on my Logicode 33H-P-CL Plug-n-Pray internal modem.
If you will recall I had two major problems with this modem and you and
others on this echo suggested many fixes, none of which had any effect!
The two problems were:
 1) No sound was being produced for the BUSY or RING condition. The
DIAL and NEGOTIATING generated noise and were completely audible.
 2) I could not generate a DCE CONNECT speed message. Whenever I used
the AT command "W2" the data screen just froze and required an ATH to
hang up. I tried three different comms programmes and many different
BBSs, all with the same result. I was only able to use "W0" (default)
or "W1", both of which generated DTE speeds which of course were useless
pieces of information as I already knew that I had the DTE speed set to
115,200 baud.
After many e-mails and 4 phone calls FROM (note the FROM) Logicode in
California, their final comment was words to the effect "... it sounds
as if you have a defective modem and as we have a lifetime warranty on
this equipment, please send it back to us for replacement ...". I
explained that I would prefer because of Customs, etc. if they would
just send me a new chip. They immediately agreed and I received the
chip in the mail yesterday. I spent 20 minutes swapping chips and my
"W2" command now works perfectly and I am able to display my DCE speed!!
The sound has not been fixed but this is so minor (I have my sound
turned off anyway) that I could care less! The only other significant
difference showing up with the new chip is that it takes approximately
10 seconds longer to negotiate a connection ... this is reflected in the
S7 register which has been increased from 50 to 60 seconds default.
What I did want to do was to thank you and the others on this echo for
the many excellent suggestions as to how to rectify my problem. I also
wanted to praise the Logicode people for their excellent response and
service! If USR had even been 1% as responsive with all the problems I
had with my 14.4 internal Sportster ... in fact I couldn't even get them
to respond at all!!!
I have used this modem now for almost 4 months and have had two 28,800
and four 33,600 connects with another 500+ being at 31,200. My
downloads average 3520 cps with not a single retry or error yet! As far
as the FAX part, it works perfectly for send and receive. The only
setting I have had to change from the factory default is the "W2" and
"M0" commands and I just use ATZ as my init string for both data and
FAX.
I paid $99 (Can) and now they are available from Future Shop here in
Richmond, B.C. for $69 (Can) after rebate ... IMHO they are well worth
$169 with the solid performance and superb support from Logicode!
