subject: PAIR GAIN PHONE SYSTEM

MD> Have any of you ever run your Supra modem on a pair gain
MD>phone line system? I just moved into an apartment and my modem and
MD>voice calls are all messed up, but the local phone provider claims
MD>everything is fine, and it is just the pair gain system that is
MD>causing modem failure. Well, I call the tech support lines
MD>and they said if the line was still an analog signal, instead of a
MD>digital signal, it should be working still. Anyway, if you
MD>ARE/HAVE used your modem on this type system let me know if you had
MD>to do something special to get it to work, or if it ever worked
MD>correctly.
It depends on what they are labelling "pair gain".
If they are increasing the AC voltage gain via transformers,
        this will hurt modem operation.
If they are "gaining a pair" (taking your copper pair and
adding multiplexers at each end to get multiple voice channels
across it)...this will hurt modem operation.
You want to have an isolated copper pair for the modem back
        to their switch site.
