   I think you don't have a choice about getting the piece of metal out of
   the gear.  Try to pry it out with an X-Acto knife.  If this piece of 
   junk is stuck in the gear, chances are the gear is scrap anyway.  
   
      That gear shouldn't cost you much more than $4 to replace.
