THE number of abortions is at a record high, official figures revealed
yesterday.

The steady climb in England and Wales since the 1970s peaked at a rate of
18.6 terminations per thousand women a year ago.

And more over 30s are opting for abortion. The number aged 30-34 DOUBLED
from 14,600 in 1976 to 28,700 in 2003.

One theory is that pregnancies in the age-group are also on the rise and
carry a greater risk of foetal abnormalities - picked up by scans.

Meanwhile, teen pregnancy rates are at their lowest for ten years. They fell
from 42.8 per thousand under 18 in 2002 to 42.3 in 2003.

That was despite 200 more teen pregnancies in 2003, said the Office for
National Statistics. Tony Blair wants to halve the rate by 2010.
