I have Office 2007 on this machine (the ultimate version or whatever it's
called) which includes onenote, groove, infopath, etc but I don't see
anything called Sharepoint designer? Is it included or do I need to
download it?

Don't confuse SharePoint and SharePoint Designer. The former is the
server and from what I have seen in tech articles is very well received.
The latter is a client product and is new to the 2007 Microsoft Office
System.

The marketing term 'SharePoint' got a bad rap from the first iteration
of
SharePoint designer. It was OK in concept, but a real pain when you
went
  to deploy and maintain.

On paper, SharePoint 2007 addresses some of these problems, but I
haven't heard from anyone who has used the new version yet.
