Downloaded EXEs have an extra layer of security on both Windows XP =

something downloaded from the Internet and displaying the digital =
signature. Don't run such EXEs from a non-trusted source.

The ZIP self-extractors that are sometimes used to package =

I assume you are unaware of how irritating many of us find current =
trends
in Windows where after we have invested many years of solid work in
Microsoft products, we find stuff like Vista which (allegedly) will =
refuse
to run certain exe files unless the exe is given full access to the =
entire
  system.

One day I will study the links you provided, but meanwhile, if you =
know,
why don't you either confirm or deny the fundamental claim?

Sometimes I have to download a DOCUMENT from Microsoft, and what I get =
is
an EXE (presumably a self-expanding archive). I have to run the exe to =
get
the doc. This is training everyone to run any exe they download. I =
suppose
this is fair enough because just opening a document these days is =
likely
to allow malware execution, although at least it would have limited
  privilege.
