That's done to improve idling and low level operating efficiency certainly, 
especially to decrease cooling demands.  It doesn't decrease power input 
requirements to sustain full output, however.

Other than for industrial vibration analysis (for which amps such as Crown's 
10 KW 3 pahse unit are usually sold), or as part of high level A3 modulators, 
I see little good reason for singular audio amps above the limits of an 
ordinary 120 circuit.  It's usually IMHO better to run more units in 
parallel.
