RC> Why can't the 32 bit flavour be run from DOS?
HM> Because it's a Windows-32 program, not a DOS 32-bit program. Windows
HM> 95 and NT are not just pretty shells surrounding DOS, but dramatically
HM> different operating sytems than the good old DOS. In particular, the
HM> memory management of Windows 95 and NT is far superior and JAR, being a
HM> "solid" archiver, takes advantage of these features.
RC> I don't use windows, hate windows...
HM> Hmmmm. Guess you don't know what you're missing, but that's O.K.
Robin needs to get with the times as not many people are working
in the wonderful world of 8/16bit apps anymore, and everything new will
ither
be win95/nt *nix or god forbit living in the wrapped world of OS/2. DOS is
dead
and I say about time using an OS which was designed to work on an 8bit
computer
when you have a 32bit computer makes no sense IMHO...
RC> but run other 32bit programs without any problem from a dv/4dos
RC> window.
This is to Robin you are in 16bit mode or prehaps with that combination you
might
even be using only 8bits I don't know what kind of hardware you have but if
it's
386DX or better you are not getting the most out of it. and if you don't like
GUI's
then get win95 and run it as a CLI being able to use names that describe what
and where
you are is worth it things like this
c:\commo\reply packets to upload
c:\commo\new Qmail packets unread
c:\zips\selfextracting\demoware\accolade\dead lock demo
BTW that these are real directories on my drive :)
I use the DOS comm program COMMO as my primany direct dial BBS comm program
it works better than the native win95 programs in that it's a quick and dirty
little program. Just one directory about 500k and does the job without alot
of bells
and whistles, Case in point ever look a Qmodem95 that has so many useless
"features"
it's not even funny. I really don't need a whole directory of WAV files to
tell
me whats is going on, Qmodem95 doesn't use text at all it accesses the sound
card
and "talks" stupid stuff like "Dailing" as if I can't here the modem dialing
the phone.
I'm one of those fools who listen to the modem and can tell what kind of
connect
I'm going to get from the other end by how it sounds. I won't go into what I
do to low
speed connects. ;^>
HM> Small correction, you run 32-bit *DOS* programs, but....
RC> Is JAR32 ONLY for windows or will it run fine with any Dos Protected
RC> Mode Interface?
Protected mode is a joke at best how can an 8bit OS use a 32bit processor to
any great
effect answer it can't. Do the words protected mode exception 14 and/or the
infamous
protected mode violation ring any bells?
HM> It's a Windows 95 / NT command-line program. Taken from JAR.DOC:
Hans I think I've gotten off track a little prehaps but I see things like
Robin's
post and get all worked up at people who want to live in the dark ages...

Sheldon
