 M> Gates holds forth on the 'pervasive Linux' threat

 M> ===
 M> Bill Gates is taking Linux very seriously - but apparently, still not
 M> seriously enough to actually understand it. Speaking to the Microsoft
 M> MVP Summit on Tuesday he bracketed Linux with other 'kill the company'
 M> threats to Microsoft, giving OS/2 as a prime example.

OS/2 was never a serious threat to M$. It was *supposed* to be a joint
endeavor between M$ and IBM. But M$ didn't want to share the revenues so
they sabotaged/delayed the OS/2 project while they went full speed ahead on
their separate and very proprietary Windows project. By the time OS/2 got
out the door, M$ had the market locked up.

 M> Or at least,
 M> that's what Peter Galli of eWeek tells us he said. Over at Microsoft
 M> Spin Central the transcript of the speech says he said something
 M> entirely different, and much more tedious. We've no idea what's going
 M> on here, but if its a trustworthiness thing, Peter gets our vote....
 M> ===

Windows 2000 uses the Linux kernel, so I'm told. I do know that it
understands Linux command-line commands and seems to have
most of the Linux basic utilities.
Assuming that this is true, then M$'s statements to the court in their
antitrust defense a couple of years ago that the Windows GUI is an
*integral* part of their operating system was and is not true.

 M> It makes me wonder what else on the Microsoft website is a fabricated
 M> version of what really happened....

Probably most of it...
