To be convicted, they have to be mentally well enough to participate in the
trial. It is considered cruel and unusual punishment to put a retarded
person to death with the death mentally. And if someone has major mental
illness, he cannot be convicted unless he is well enough to participate in
his trial.

I am not suggesting that these rules apply in all cases.

You don't eat through a feeding tube. Food is shoved into the stomach.

As far as being able to eat jello, I don't recall seeing any realiable
reports showing this.

The parts of the brain that make speech  were  not working in Terri's case.
While I won't question whether or not the testimoney occurred. At the end of
her life, Terri's parents testified  that she said something. Sbe was just
making random noises. I believe if the reports  are true, it is more in the
imagination of the people hear the sounds than reality that she was saying
anything specific.
