Changing preferences to show 'hidden' files should do the same thing.
Some file managers may not have this but Thunar, the XFCE file manager
which I use, does. So, if you want to use a GUI file manager, test it to
see what it does.
I checked what I suggested before posting: I found that cp 8.29 refuses
to copy a directory containing files and/or directories unless the -d
option is specified.
