  On 07 Jul 97, CHRISTOPHER TARANA entered the following ASCII codes for the 
express viewing pleasure of Bill Wunsch:
 CT>         Actually Bill, Clipper 214 only had time to get a quick "Mayday"
 CT> off before going down.  It was National 16 that alerted ATC to Clipper
 CT> 214's predictament.
Thanks for the update.  Time does things to memories, but I can still recall 
fairly clearly a short excerpt from the actual ATC tape that was played on 
the TV news.  Based on what the news commentator said, I thought the message 
had come from Clipper 214 - perhaps he didn't know either (not uncommon for 
the news).  This is the way I remember it:
Aircraft:  Clipper 214 is going down in flames.
ATC:  ??? Say again. ??  (You could hear the "question marks" in the 
controllers voice)
Aircraft:  Clipper 214 is going down in flames.
ATC:  Rodger.  Message received and understood.
It sent chills up and down my back when I heard it.
