NFPI Launches In-depth Study at Fathers Direct Conference on 5 April 05
Date issued: 4 Apr 2005

Ref No: NFPI/05/235

Fathers are increasingly involved in their children's lives but how
far does this extend beyond the football pitch or computer and into the
playground and homework? A new National Parenting and Family Institute
(NFPI) study, Fathers' Involvement in their Children's Education by
Rebecca Goldman, takes the most comprehensive look to date at the role
played by UK fathers. It will be launched at the Fathers' Direct
conference on Tuesday 5 April 2005.

The report puts together a range of studies for educators and policy
makers. It describes how fathers already participate in mainstream
education and family learning programmes. It also shows why it is
crucial to have them involved, offering plenty of good ideas about how
to bring in more fathers, father-figures and male carers from all
backgrounds and ethnic groups.

Mary MacLeod, NFPI Chief Executive, says, 'We know just how great
kids feel when their dads are proud of them and show an interest in
what they are doing. This report helps schools to do their bit in
making this happen by welcoming fathers into schools and making it
easier for them to get involved than we have in the past.'

Included is a guide to effective practice with thirteen in-depth case
studies ranging from a cookery skills course to a teenage 'Dads and
Lads' book club.

Duncan Fisher, Chief Executive of Fathers Direct, says of the study,
'Dads, like mums, want the best for their children, but can easily
become detached from their children's education. These initiatives,
bringing dads in, are breaking through barriers that fathers face and
can radically transform a child's prospects.'
