Nothing strange at all about magnetic drive pumps. They come in sizes up
to one horsepower that I know of (and may be available larger), and are very
reliable. In fact, if you want a real good, but basic, example of one, run
down to your local quickie mart and look at their Jet Spray. Those Jet
Spray's have run magnetic drive pumps for over 45 years. The impeller sits
in the bottom of the clear plastic bowl, and has the housing snapped over it.
The motor is located beneath the stainless steel bottom plate. Basic, but
the same principle.
