subject: Upgrade 33.6

HS>SP> in my New Hayes Accura
HS>SP> 288 external.
HS>SP> I had just bought a New USR Sportster 288/33.6 but had to
HS>SP> return it. I discovered it and many of USRs Sportsters have a bad
HS>SP> chip called the "pause bug". Loging into BBS's it (USR) will just
HS>SP> stop after a few min's. then statup again.
HS>SP> I think its great news about the 33.6 upgrade. I'm sure HAYES
HS>SP> will let us all know when it will be available, and how they will
HS>SP> handle it. My question is, what speed should I lock my 16550A
HS>SP> ports at? I'm useing PCBoard BBS that recommends the highest
HS>SP> possible being 115200 PCBoard has a PCBmodem setup to auto
HS>SP> configure most any modem. How do I know that they are the best
HS>SP> strings and most current? I have tried a few downloads (cross
HS>SP> country FREQ) and the average download speed is from 2300 to tops
HS>SP> 2500 cps. I downloaded the "sysops kit" from HAYES support BBS
HS>SP> (small file) and it showed 3500cps! using Hayes Smartcom for Win
HS>SP> LE. set at 115200. Steve
HS>Steve,
HS> Yes, we'll let everyone know about the 33.6 upgrades as soon as we
HS> have all the details. Keep an eye on
HS> the http://www.hayes.com/336upg.htm because info will be there
HS> the first.
PMFJI Mr. Michael, but I check the URL page yesterday and from what I
could read that Hayes is charging $139.00 for the upgrade of the Optima
PCMCIA modem from 28800 to 33600???? Is this correct????
HS> As for the PCBMODEM settings for Hayes modems, I have found them
HS> to be right on the mark. I have run a PCBoard BBS using a Hayes
HS> modem (OPTIMA 288) for years using these settings. As for the
HS> port speed, I usually set mine to 38,400 bit/s, as you don't
HS> really need to go higher than that if you are just transferring
HS> compressed files, and I tend to operate the BBS under desqview and
HS> prefer to use a lower speed to avoid any problems under that
HS> multitasking environment. A higher port speed will make your menu
HS> screens and text come up faster, however. You will find that your
HS> download speeds will vary quite a bit depending on where you call
HS> and the specific phone line conditions between your modem and the
HS> modem you are calling into.
